As a makeup artist, licensed aesthetician and specialist in glow, I am often asked what it takes to get GLOW. There are two main components of glow:
- Firstly, it is skin texture; the overall smoothness and softness of the skin.
- Secondly it is complexion which is largely influenced by genes, diet and lifestyle (in particular if you avoid smoking or drinking).
In this article, I will focus first on texture and color as I recently went through a bad bout of breakouts that wrecked my glow no matter how much foundation I put on.
This is how I went from acne to glow!
In my line of work as a makeup artist, I am constantly bombarded with marketing pushing the latest fad product to stop acne.
However, if you look at a dermatologist’s warchest¹, there are only a couple tools that they have used for decades to handle virtually every type of acne ranging from regular breakouts, stress breakouts, hormonal breakouts, etc.
Using their experience and decades of research, I came up with a simple 4-step process that will get you the texture and color for amazing glow:
Wash your face twice per day.
As basic as it sounds, many people get it wrong. For clear skin, you only need to wash once in the morning and once at night. Do not overwash as you will strip away oils and force your skin to overproduce sebum.
Choose a cleanser that is gentle on your skin. The Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser is an excellent wash suitable for all but the most oily skin types.
Shrink the visibility of pores with Toner.
Both morning and evening, I apply toner after I wash my face as it balances the pH of my skin and reduces the visibility of my pores.
Choose a toner which has little or no alcohol as you do not want to dehydrate your skin (thereby weakening your skin’s complexion). Clearly offers a gentle alcohol-free toner which uses witch hazel, cucumber and rose water.
Heavy hitter for smooth texture.
The Clear Out contains medical grade retinol and AZA … two often used tools in a dermie’s warchest. As the name suggests, it gets inside the pore to flush out dead skin and clogs. With the clogs removed, pimples occur less frequently and even if they do, the breakouts are less intense.
Why not use a clay mask, scrub or peel instead?
Because they are NOT left on LONG ENOUGH to penetrate into the pore². I have all tried these products yet they have done little to clear clogs and breakouts. In order to be effective at clearing clogs, opt for a lotion that can be left on overnight where it has time to penetrate into the pore.
Getting rid of post-acne marks.
As a woman of color, my post-acne red marks always pick up pigmentation when exposed to UV. The Lighten Up has really helped reduce the appearance of these post-acne marks so that there is less chances that these red marks would get exposed to UV light and collect stubborn brown pigmentation.
I haven’t come across a product as effective as the Lighten Up … it has significantly reduced the need for concealer.
“Use this simple 4-step process consistently and within two months, you’ll get your skin to a happy-place.”
As a reminder during the day, make sure to apply non-comedogenic sunblock with SPF35 or higher as you should always protect your skin from the sun’s damaging UV rays!

So the difference between the two pics is, my face is slimmer (woo! 💪🏽) and LOOK AT MY SKIN!! The first picture is March 11 and the second is TODAY! The ONLY product that I’ve been using on my skin is @clearlybasics ! I swear the Power Duo (Clear Out and Lighten Up) are a GOD-send! • • I’ve been using both consistently for 3 months now and my skin has NEVER looked or felt better! I haven’t experienced a breakout since March and more than 80% of my hyperpigmentation is GONE! • • I’m so grateful to have finally found a product that actually works for my skin! • • If you’re dealing with acne breakouts and hyperpigmentation, you should def research Clearly Basics. • • If you decide to buy, use my coupon code: GODDESSGLOW #acnetoGLOW #clearlybasic #acnescars #skin #skincare #acnesystem #esthetician

@gabriela.akrapovic Absolutely so happy with this product! My cheeks were congested and had so many breakouts and redness I didn’t know what to do anymore. I tried everything. I kept seeing Clearly Basic showing up on my Facebook and Instagram and thought what the hell and decided to order the complete trio moisturizer pack. It came in cute packaging and the directions were clear. I started using it two months ago and my god there is a lot of improvement!! My cheeks are less congested and red. I have mostly dark spots but the lighten up is definitely helping with that! I rarely get any big breakouts and even if a pimple starts to show the Clear Out stops it in it’s track. The Protective Moisturizer is great for my sensitive skin and helps keep my skin feel moisturized but doesn’t make my skin go oily. I definitely would recommend this product and I can’t wait to see how my skin will be in the few months using Clearly Basics! Thanks Clearly Basics!!
@pimpledgirl The 1st week was amazed! Fascinating skin texture, there were no stinging. The 2nd week were pretty same. The 3rd week – purging starred – bumpy skin, redness. The 4th week – same but I added #ProtectiveMoisturiser either from @clearlybasics and in three days redness was reduced. The 5-6th weeks – skin smoother, less red, breaking out badly. The 7-8th week – is it my skin? not red (even after washing as it used to be).
I’d say the amount of pustules has been reduced in 85%. I still have some tiny-tiny pimples and will keep going with mu treatment. • Honestly I’m very grateful to Clearly Basics • I’ll keep you updated.
@beatlebarbs Hey guys! So I rarely write reviews for products I purchase, but I’m going make an exception for Clear Out, because it literally changed my life (what a cliche I know).
I’ve suffered from acne pretty much my whole life. I had ups and downs but mostly downs. After I moved to London I was under a lot of stress and my body was a mess. So was my skin. I’m generally a happy and optimistic person, or at least I try to be, but acne made it impossible for me for a while. It got to a point where I couldn’t look at myself in the mirror without crying. I didn’t wanna go out or even meet my friends. My self confidence was nonexistent. I had severe anxieties and break downs. I wasn’t myself anymore. I sought the help of a GP and dermatologist but nothing worked. Antibiotics made my skin look even worse. ⠀⠀
Then I read about the Clear Out somewhere on internet and the reviews were great. Still a bit skeptical, I decided to give it a shot and thank God I did. My skin improved drastically and even though I still get a pimple or two every now and then, I am overall very happy with the results. It makes your skin glow, look fresh and healthier. ⠀⠀
For some people acne might seem as not a big deal and I feel like a lot of people underestimate it a lot and think of it as only a small “beauty defect”. It’s so much more than that though…it can affect your every day life, relationships, mental health and can lead to anxieties or depression. I’ve been through all that and THANK GOD I got out. Thank you so much Clear out for helping me to be myself again. I could not recommend this product enough!
@beas.bareskin Clearly Basics have been with me for about a week and I’m so happy I’ve been using their product!!!!!
My fave between these 3 is the “Lighten up” one because it has definitely helped with the redness! The redness on my cheeks are slowly dimming down and the texture of my skin is so soft and smooth.
You may not be able to tell cuz pictures don’t do it justice but if you were to have felt my skin before I used their products compared to now you can definitely feel the difference !!!
@skinwithak @clearlybasics helped maintain my skin after prescription oral medication and honestly their products have helped so many, I get many DM’s thanking me for recommending Clearly Basics and how it’s helped them.
If I knew about @clearlybasics prior to my course of prescription oral medication I would’ve definitely gone with using Clear Out for sure!
@deannaskin Over the past month and a half I’ve noticed a massive change to the appearance and texture of my skin since using @clearlybasics. Honestly the most effective products (vegan of course) I’ve used all year. Not only has the redness of my spots reduced, but I rarely get painful under-the-skin bumps or huge whiteheads anymore. My scars have also faded so quickly 👀
If your skin is similar to mine I’d 100% recommend that you implement these products into your skincare routine.
I’m only a few weeks in using these products but the results have been so positive🔮🧚🏽♀️
