Tried just about everything to get rid of acne but to no avail? Don’t despair. To see clearer skin, you probably just need to make a few simple adjustments.
The following tips from dermatologists can help you get started.
1. Give any product or treatment you are trying at least 4 weeks to work
Using a new acne product every few days may seem useful, but that approach can worsen acne. Clearing clogs needs time to work. Using a different product every few days may irritate your skin, causing new breakouts.
Try 1 or 2 products, and give them time to work. Trying too many products can stress your skin, worsening acne.
If a treatment works for you, you should notice some improvement in 4 to 6 weeks. However, for some people, it can take 2 to 3 months or longer to see clearing.
If you notice improvement, don’t stop. Even when you see clearing, you’ll want to keep using the product or treatment. This helps to prevent new breakouts.
Note: If you have very severe acne, you’ll need a dermatologist to help clear your skin. Acne products over the counter won’t be able to clear very severe acne.
2. Follow instructions/directions
While using an acne treatment can seem pretty straightforward, how much you use and how often you use it can make a huge difference. Be sure to follow the instructions/directions.
If a dermatologist created your treatment plan, follow your doctor’s instruction and use everything your dermatologist included in the treatment plan.
3. Only wash your face twice a day or when you’re sweaty
Acne-prone skin is sensitive. Washing more than twice a day can irritate your skin, making acne worse.
For best results, dermatologists recommend washing your face when:
- You wake up
- You’re ready to go to bed
- It gets sweaty
4. Stop scrubbing your face!
If your skin feels greasy, dirty, or grimy, you may be tempted to scrub it clean. Don’t!
Scrubbing can irritate acne-prone skin, which worsens acne.
5. Choose skincare products and cosmetics that don’t cause acne
These products are labeled. On the package, you may see one of the following:
- Won’t clog pores
- Oil free
Because some of these skin care products may still cause acne in a few people, you may need to try different products before you find ones that don’t cause you to breakout.
6. Resist touching, picking, and popping your acne
Popping a pimple may seem like the fastest way to clear it, but popping it can actually make things worse. We can’t stress this enough.
Every time you touch, pick, or pop, you can worsen acne.
7. Spread acne medication across your skin, not just your blemishes
Why? Because applying a thin layer on your acne-prone skin helps treat existing acne and prevent new breakouts.
8. Wash your pillowcases, hats, and other things that touch your acne-prone skin
Dead skin cells, bacteria, and dirt will build up on these surfaces, which can clog your pores. Washing what touches your acne-prone skin can prevent this.
Changing your sheets every week and your pillowcase twice a week can make a difference.
9. Enlist a dermatologist’s help
If you still have acne after trying these tips — or you have acne cysts or nodules (deep blemishes that leave scars when they clear) — a dermatologist can help.
With today’s acne treatments and a dermatologist’s expertise, virtually every case of acne can be cleared. A dermatologist can tailor a treatment plan to your unique needs.

@xx.tonilumsden This is me 5 weeks into my skincare journey with @clearlybasics.
5 weeks ago, 5 months ago, and even 5 years ago, I had lost all hope for my skin and appearance. Now I have regained that hope and positivity because I know that I am using amazing skincare products by @clearlybasics that actually do work without being harsh on my skin.
Just because you feel like nothing is working doesn’t mean you should give up on hope.
@deannaskin Over the past month and a half I’ve noticed a massive change to the appearance and texture of my skin since using @clearlybasics. Honestly the most effective products (vegan of course) I’ve used all year. Not only has the redness of my spots reduced, but I rarely get painful under-the-skin bumps or huge whiteheads anymore. My scars have also faded so quickly 👀
If your skin is similar to mine I’d 100% recommend that you implement these products into your skincare routine.
I’m only a few weeks in using these products but the results have been so positive🔮🧚🏽♀️
@_myskinstory 😭 I feel like I’m an addict and someone has taken away my drugs 😂
Saturday night I came to the end of my @clearlybasics Clear Out bottle. After consistently applying it every night for 3 months along side Niacinamide & Zinc so last night I had nothing to apply. (Right picture: a few days previous. Left picture: This morning) As soon as I woke up I knew it different feel great! 😭
Regardless off the other amazing benefits that a 2% Retinol & Azaleic Acid has; I JUST WANT MY GLOW BACK!! I’ll dedicate my next post to the ingredients and how they ‘clearly’ work!!
@gemskin__ A little progress goes a long way! 🙌🏻 In the first picture I think my skin was purging from the first week of using @clearlybasics ‘Clear Out’. I believe I actually cried either before or after I took this photo, my skin was super painful and I felt so ugly and self conscious!
The second picture is 5 weeks after using Clear Out, just scarring (being helped by using Lighten Up) and no actives!
I’m so happy with the results so far using these products and they have been the only thing that has helped my skin!
@myacnepage So there’s been some progress with my scarring🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼.
These are Clearly Basics results for 1 month of using the lighten up, you can use CODE EMMA for 10% off at the checkout (only if u want)
